# The Klaviyo + WhatsApp Flows Every ₹10L/Month D2C Brand Needs

[HKM](https://hk-media.co.in/blog/author/hkm)

If you're spending lakhs on Meta every month and your only automation is a single abandoned-cart email, you're paying for the same customer twice. The right Klaviyo flows for D2C brands, paired with WhatsApp, turn one-time buyers into repeat revenue without adding a rupee to your ad budget.

Most D2C brands don't have a traffic problem. They have a systems problem. Here are the seven retention flows every ₹10L/month brand should have running, what to send on email vs WhatsApp, when to send it, and the India-specific details most playbooks skip.

---

## Why do flows come before more ad spend

A campaign is something you send. A flow is something that runs. Once it's built, a flow works on every new subscriber, every abandoned cart and every first-time buyer, every day, while you focus on the business.

In our audits of Indian skincare, beauty, fashion and wellness brands doing ₹5L–3Cr/month, the pattern repeats: strong creatives, decent traffic, and almost nothing set up for what happens after the first click or the first order. That's where margin leaks.

One skincare brand we worked with was at ₹8L/month with a 0.9% PDP conversion rate and no retention flows at all. We rebuilt the product page, introduced UGC creatives, set up email and WhatsApp flows, and simplified the offer. Within 60 days, conversion rate went from 0.9% to 1.8%, CAC dropped 32%, and repeat revenue that simply didn't exist before started coming in.

### The rule for email vs WhatsApp

- **Email** is for storytelling, education and detail: ingredient breakdowns, routines, founder notes, reviews.
- **WhatsApp** is for urgency and action: order confirmations, a cart reminder, a restock nudge, one clear link.

Use WhatsApp sparingly. It's a personal inbox, and every message you send there spends trust. Email can carry more volume.

## The 7 Klaviyo + WhatsApp flows

### 1. Welcome series

Triggered when someone joins your list via a pop-up or footer form. This is your first impression, so don't open with "here's 10% off" and go silent.

- **Email 1 (instant):** deliver the promised offer, plus a short line on what makes the brand different.
- **Email 2 (day 2):** the problem you solve and who it's for. Founder story works well here.
- **Email 3 (day 4):** social proof. Reviews, UGC, before-and-afters.
- **Email 4 (day 6):** bestsellers or a "start here" bundle, with a reminder that the offer is expiring.
- **WhatsApp (day 5–6, opted-in only):** one message reminding them their code is still live, with a direct link.

Exit anyone who purchases so they move into post-purchase instead.

### 2. Browse abandonment

Triggered when a known visitor views a product but doesn't add to cart. Keep it soft. One or two emails, starting a few hours after the session, showing the product they viewed, its key benefit and two or three reviews. No discount here. You're answering doubts, not bribing.

### 3. Cart and checkout abandonment

These are your highest-intent flows, so they get both channels.

- **WhatsApp (30–60 minutes):** a short, friendly reminder with the product image and a link straight back to the cart.
- **Email 1 (2–4 hours):** the cart contents, reviews, and the answer to the most common objection (shipping time, returns, skin type).
- **Email 2 (24 hours):** FAQs and reassurance. COD available, easy returns, how fast it ships.
- **Email 3 (48 hours, optional):** a small incentive, only if your margins allow and only for first-time buyers.

Checkout abandonment (they entered details but didn't pay) deserves its own branch. Often the issue is payment: a failed UPI attempt or doubt about prepaying. Offer COD or a prepaid perk instead of a discount.

If carts are being abandoned before checkout even starts, the leak is usually on the product page itself. We broke that down in [why your Shopify product page converts under 1%](https://hk-media.co.in/blog/why-your-shopify-product-page-converts-under-1-percent).

### 4. Post-purchase

This is the flow most brands get wrong, because they treat it as "order confirmed" and stop. The first order is where repeat purchase is won or lost.

- **WhatsApp (instant):** order confirmation, and for COD orders, a confirm-or-cancel prompt (more on this below).
- **WhatsApp (on dispatch and delivery):** shipping updates. These are the messages customers actually want.
- **Email (on delivery):** how to use the product. Routine, quantity, what to expect in week one.
- **Email (day 7–10):** check in and ask for a review or UGC.
- **Email (day 14–21):** a cross-sell that fits naturally. Cleanser buyers get the moisturiser.

### 5. Replenishment

For consumables like serums, supplements and haircare, time the reminder to when the product runs out. If a bottle lasts about 30 days, send around day 22–25.

- **Email:** "running low?" with a one-click reorder link and a subscribe-and-save option if you offer one.
- **WhatsApp (2–3 days later, if no reorder):** a single nudge with the reorder link.

Use your own order data to set the timing. Look at when repeat customers actually reorder and work backwards.

### 6. Win-back

Triggered when a customer hasn't purchased in roughly two to three times your normal repurchase window. Start with value, not discounts: what's new, what's improved, what other customers are loving. Bring in an offer only in the final message. If they still don't engage, suppress them from regular sends to protect your email deliverability.

### 7. VIP

Triggered when a customer crosses a spend or order-count threshold you define. These are your best customers. Treat them that way: early access to launches, a personal thank-you from the founder, and exclusive bundles. WhatsApp works well here for launch-day access because the list is small and the message is welcome.

## India-specific details that make or break these flows

### COD confirmation

Cash on delivery is still a big part of Indian D2C, and unconfirmed COD orders are where RTO (return to origin) losses pile up. Send a WhatsApp message the moment a COD order is placed asking the customer to confirm, with a small incentive to switch to prepaid. Hold dispatch on orders that don't confirm after a reminder. It's one of the simplest margin fixes we set up.

### WhatsApp opt-in

You need explicit opt-in before sending marketing messages on WhatsApp. Collect it at checkout and on sign-up forms with a clear, unticked checkbox, and say what you'll send. Business-initiated messages go out through the WhatsApp Business Platform using pre-approved templates, so plan your copy accordingly.

### DLT and consent

If you also send SMS, Indian telecom rules require DLT registration of your sender ID and templates. More broadly, record when and where each customer gave consent, honour opt-outs immediately, and keep marketing and transactional messages separate. Get a compliance review if you're unsure. This post isn't legal advice.

---

## How to roll this out without a 3-month project

1. **Week 1:** cart and checkout abandonment, plus COD confirmation. Fastest payback.
2. **Week 2:** welcome series and post-purchase.
3. **Week 3:** replenishment and browse abandonment.
4. **Week 4:** win-back and VIP, once you have enough order history to segment.

Then review monthly: revenue per recipient, repeat purchase rate, and unsubscribes by flow. Kill what doesn't work, test what does.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Klaviyo flow should a D2C brand set up first?

Cart and checkout abandonment. These shoppers already chose a product and showed buying intent, so a well-timed email and WhatsApp reminder recovers revenue faster than any other flow. Add COD confirmation alongside it if a meaningful share of your orders are cash on delivery.

### Should I use email or WhatsApp for retention flows?

Both, for different jobs. Use email for education, storytelling and reviews, where you have room to persuade. Use WhatsApp for time-sensitive actions such as order updates, cart reminders and restock nudges, and keep the frequency low so customers don't mute you.

### How many messages should a welcome series have?

Three to five emails over about a week works for most D2C brands, with at most one WhatsApp reminder for subscribers who opted in. Stop the series as soon as someone buys and move them into your post-purchase flow.

## Fix the system before you scale the spend

Every flow above makes your existing traffic worth more. That's what lowers CAC and raises LTV for real, not another round of ad tests. If you'd rather have this built and managed end-to-end, it's part of our [Growth Partner Program](https://hk-media.co.in/service), alongside PDP, offer and creative work.
